A Year In Style – Part 1

The headline in English and German was “Law and Fashion” and it was the first post by Style Nouveau Blog on June 18th, 2013. As an autobiographical post I could have also headlined it “About Jonela” or rather “Dr. Jonela Hoxhaj or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Confessed to Fashion”;-) That first blog entry was as long as probably only a mad-for-fashion-lawyer could manage…. . It was followed by several other posts about personal style, travel, art and other life style themes, garnished with a bit of history, literature, love of my native country, with a wink here and there.
The year went by in a flash; so it is time to celebrate the first anniversary. Here are some published and unpublished pictures from one year Style Nouveau Blog. Since there were many favourites in the “archives”, I decided to publish two anniversary blog posts. As they say: Two are better than one….. .

Advocate for Style

That was the headline the editorial team of the Albanian magazine “Elegance” chose for an interview with me in its May issue. The headline was a very nice surprise as I only learned about it when the magazine came out on May 13th. Here the interview in Albanian illustrated with pictures from the blog posts of the last months. A translation will follow soon.

Spring in the City

It is spring! What can better describe spring feelings as Goethe’s famous scene from “Faust”:

“Released from ice are brook and river / By the quickening glance of the gracious Spring; / The colors of hope to the valley cling, / And weak old Winter himself must shiver, / Withdrawn to the mountains, a crownless king: / Whence, ever retreating, he sends again / Impotent showers of sleet that darkle / In belts across the green o’ the plain. / But the sun will permit no white to sparkle; / […]  / Yonder afar, from the hill-paths blinking, / Their clothes are colors that softly gleam. / I hear the noise of the village, even; / Here is the People’s proper Heaven; / Here high and low contented see! / Here I am Man,— dare man to be!” (Faust, by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, translated by Bayard Taylor, available online here)

Divina Comedia

DSCF5326

I saw the Lady, who erewhile appeared / Veiled underneath the angelic festival, /Direct her eyes to me across the river. / Although the veil, that from her head descended, / Encircled with the foliage of Minerva, / Did not permit her to appear distinctly, / In attitude still royally majestic / Continued she, like unto one who speaks, / And keeps his warmest utterance in reserve: / “Look at me well; in sooth I’m Beatrice! / How didst thou deign to come unto the Mountain? /
Didst thou not know that man is happy here?” (Alighieri, Dante, The Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, Canto XXX, translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1867, available online here)

Spring Flowers and Red Carpet

This year, spring came forward earlier than usual in Germany. As a Southern child, I can not look forward enough about it. I rejoiced that in the city I now call my second home a Spring Ball was held again after many many years.

The Roaring Twenties

Good old days, those twenties: short hair, shorter skirts, rebellious behaviour, cool parties. Wait, wait, I am not talking about my (everlasting…) twenties. I might come back to reflections about the gap between “calendar age” and “felt age” at a later time. I mean here the Roaring Twenties, that infamous era of Prohibition, of Charlie Chaplin, Duke Ellington, Josephine Baker and Louis Armstrong, Joan Crawford, Louise Brooks and the young Coco Chanel, feathers, layers of pearls and Art Deco, F Scott. Fitzgerald and his ” Great Gatsby”, Al Capone, illegal parties with loads of alcohol and Charleston in the so-called speakeasies. And yes, we women received our right to vote during that era.

Maybe you remember one of my summer blog entries with pictures made at summer parties. It was an easy blog entry, easy like the summer. But even the melancholy winter brings a lot of celebrations, not less beautiful than the summer celebrations. They are just beautiful in another way. Here are some photos from various events over the past months.

Hours à la Milanese

Eight and a half hours, this is how long I stayed last November in Milan on my way to Parma. 8 1/2 is also the title of a famous Fellini film, but that is another story.

One can spend days and hours by strolling through the shops, cafes and restaurants in Milan. Let me take you along a virtual tour to some special places I go to every time I visit Milan, no matter how long I stay in the city.

Into the Blue

On the first Advent Sunday wearing a turquoise blue coat by Fabrizio Lenzi

Looking through my pictures of the last months I realized how many shades of blue I had chosen to wear. Blue is the colour of the unfathomable depth of sea, the radiant sky and the sapphires, the colour of the vastness and the infinity, of relaxation, silence and aspiration…
